TUBX07: UH-1 Huey Transport Helicopter Platoon

The UH-1H Huey utility helicopters of the 82nd Aviation Brigade provide the riflemen of the 82nd Airborne Division with airlift capability for quick in-theatre redeployment, and for air assault combat operations for insertion behind the enemy’s lines.

Each Huey is fitted with a pair of M60 machineguns mounted at the side doors to give covering fire during landing and unloading or loading of passengers. The M60 door guns are crewed by a dedicated door gunner and the crew chief.

In Israeli Service
The first Bell UH-1 Iroquois or Huey helicopters that Israel obtained were of the UH-1D in 1969, but following this they got a batch of UH-1N with the twin engine, as used by the Canadians and US Marines. By the 1980s they operated a mixed fleet of 64 UH-1 helicopters. Israeli Hueys have seen use in various Middle East conflicts and against Palestinian militants on the Lebanon border.

The UH-1 Twin Huey Transport helicopters are flown by the Israeli Air Force with the 123rd Squadron (Southern Bells Squadron). Their main assignment is transportation and extraction, as well as search and rescue. During the Yom Kippur War in 1973 the squadron operated mainly on the Southern Front against the Egyptians.
