TSU716: Air Assault Weapons

The paratroopers, the desantniki (those who land), are the elite of the Soviet ground forces. They are tough fighters with many afgantsy veterans among their ranks. They are trained to drop into a target zone and be prepared to fight immediately. They can land by parachute or by helicopter and have their own infantry fighting vehicles that can arrive with them by parachute or be brought in later by transport aircraft.

PKM sustained fire machine-guns and AGS-17 grenade launchers provide an Air Assault Company with additional firepower. They often have attached SA-14 Gremlin (Strela-3 or Arrow-3) anti-aircraft missile teams from the battalion’s air defence platoon. 

The Soviet Air Landing Forces make use of the tried and tested 82mm BM-37 mortar which first came into service in 1937. Modernised throughout its service history, modern ammunition types have improved the effective range of the BM-37. As well as dropping a barrage of high-explosive rounds on a target at short notice, it can also deliver a smoke bombardment to blind the enemy or obscure the Soviet paratroopers’ movement.
