TGR002: Wiesel TOW Panzerabwehr Zug

In the 1970s, West Germany recognized that their infantry formations – especially airborne formations – lacked any real ability to combat Soviet main battle tanks. To fill this gap, the Bundeswher developed a modern tankette light enough to be air transported. Although it can’t be dropped by parachute, the Wiesel can be transported by helicopter or aircraft in groups of two, four, or more ensuring rapid forward deployment. The diminutive Wiesel (“weasel”) weighs between 2.75 and 4.75 tonnes depending on configuration and is powered by an Audi 5 cylinder inline turbo-diesel engine. The vehicle’s tiny profile and agility makes it difficult to spot on the battlefield. When coupled with the Raytheon improved TOW missile system, it provides strong anti-tank support, especially when fired from concealment during an ambush.
