The Royal Marine Commando Troop is organised in a similar way to the Army’s rifle and mechanised platoons, with an HQ section and three rifle sections, each with eight personnel split into a Rifle Group and a Gun Group. However, a key difference is the inclusion of an L4A4 Bren light machine-gun in the Rifle Group in place of a rifleman, increasing their available automatic fire.
Like the Army, the L1A1 SLR (FN FAL) is the standard service rifle and the L7A2 (FN MAG) the standard general-purpose machine-gun (GPMG). The Gun Group, led by the Section second in command, was based around the GPMG.
The section is also equipped with an L14A1 Medium Anti-tank Weapon (MAW) Carl Gustav 84mm recoilless rifle. This could be concentrated in the troops, with assaulting sections leaving the fairly burdensome weapon. behind with a section left in reserve. The Carl Gustav assistant carried four rounds for the weapon (although more could be distributed throughout the section if necessary). In addition to the Carl Gustav, two 66mm antitank weapons are the basic load per section, but four to six are generally available to the section as a whole. The L4A4 Bren was a unique feature of the Royal Marines, allotting them greater firepower.

A Parachute Platoon is organised much like any other rifle or mechanised platoon in the Army. However, the intense training and esprit de corps of the Parachute Regiment is second to none.
One noticeable difference from the standard ‘crap hat’ (slang used by the Paras and Marines for the other infantry of the British Army, derived from their khaki-coloured berets) platoon is the Paras’ increased section firepower with two L7A2 GPMGs per section instead of one. Like the Marines and the rest of the Army, additional firepower comes in the form of a Medium Anti-tank Weapon (MAW) (84mm Carl Gustav) in each of their three section as well as 66mm (M72 LAW) anti-tank weapons.
The Territoral Army reserve parachute battalions were given a new role in the mid-1980s. Issued with more Milan missiles, their mission was to be rapidly deployed forward by air as soon as war started and there to act as a ‘forlorn hope’ anti-tank screen.
