The United States T29 heavy tank project was instigated to design a heavy tank with the armament and armour to counter the recent appearance of German Tiger II heavy tanks on the battlefield.
The T30 and T34 variations featured increased calibres of main gun, 155mm and 120mm respectively as well as other improvements to the tank engine and armour.
