At the western end of the Wall is Shadow Tower and the men of the Night's Watch quartered within it. Like all the brethren of the Night's Watch, the Shadowtower spearmen wield black leather and sooty steel, which are best suited to shelter from the legendary chill of the North. Lancers excel at flanking protection, adept at taking on enemy charges of both cavalry and infantry and carrying out devastating counterattacks before their opponents are upon them. Spearmen can hold the center of a battle line steady if necessary, but ideally keep moving. In addition, they are not the best troops to lead an offensive action, but it is very easy to support such a maneuver.
