The M10 was first used in North Africa where the 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion wreaked havoc on German tank formations there.

As German tanks became harder to deal with, the tank destroyer arm decided to up-gun their M10s with the M3 90mm anti-aircraft gun. A larger turret was designed to hold the new weapon. The new vehicle was designated the M36 90mm GMC.

Lend-lease Soviet Use
The 29th Tank Corps’s 1223rd Self-propelled Artillery Regiment is unusual in being one of two such regiments to be armed with the American Lend-lease M10 tank destroyer. The 29th Tank Corps is part of the 5th Guards Tank Army and fights with the Third Byelorussian Front in 1944 and 1945, taking part in summer campaigns in Beylorussia, the Baltic, and East Prussia.

The other M10 unit is the 1239th Self-propelled Artillery Regiment which is part of the 16th Tank Corps, 2nd Tank Army, which fought in Byelorussia and Poland in 1944. On 20 November 1944, the Corps was awarded ‘Guards’ status to become 12th Guards Tank Corps. The Corps then took part in the Vistula-Oder and Berlin Operations.
