The M113 armoured personnel carrier has served in the US Army since 1960, and with tens of thousands built, this versatile vehicle still has decades of service left in it. Designed to carry a squad of infantry into battle, safe from small-arms fire and artillery fragments under its revolutionary light-weight aluminium armour, the M113 is the classic modern infantry carrier.
Once the infantry have dismounted, the ‘tracks’ support them with long-range fire. For this role, they can mount the infantry squad’s M47 Dragon beside the machine-gun. As improvised tank-killers, the tracks can manoeuvre onto the flanks of attacking tanks.
The M106 (107mm) self-propelled mortar mounts the M30 107mm (4.2”) mortar on a turntable in the rear of the standard M113 APC. The M113 chassis allows the mortars to keep pace with the tank platoons, while protecting their crews against artillery splinters and small arms fire, ensuring immediate support when required.
