TGBX09: M113 Panzermorser Zug

The venerable M113 serves ably as an indirect fire platform when equipped with the M120 Mörser (mortar). The platform can fire a variety of high explosive and smoke ammunition types, and the vehicle has a capacity of over 60 rounds. The mobility of the M113 chassis allows the mortar to be set up quickly, and it can relocate quickly as any action against the Warsaw Pact was envisioned to be highly fluid.

In a panzergrenadier battalion some of the infantry are mounted in American built M113 armoured personnel carriers (APCs).

A panzergrenadier battalion in a panzergrenadier brigade consisted of three panzergrenadier companies. Two are mounted in Marders and one is mounted in M113s. The M113 equipped companies were organised the same as Marder equipped companies except they have a larger allocation of Milan anti-tank missiles. Each Panzergrenadier Zug (Platoon) have three instead of two missile systems due to the increased carrying capacity of the M113 over the Marder.

The mobility and protection offered by their M113 armoured personnel carriers, like the Marders, is well-suited for swift changes between manoeurve and dismounted combat. This enables them to keep pace with their tanks while still being able to clear villages and dense terrain that cannot be entered or held by the tanks.

Though the M113 cannot offer the same sort of support firepower as the Marder, the M113 Panzergrenadiers still rely on a combination of fire and movement while attacking in conjunction with the Leopard main battle tanks.
