TBBX11: Challenger Armoured Troop

The new Challenger is not so much a revolution, but an evolution of the tried and tested Chieftain. Even though it was not a design intended for the British Army (but developed as the Shir 2 for the Iranian Army until the cancellation of its order after the Islamic Revolution), it incorporates advancements over the Chieftain. The armour has been improved incorporating composite Chobham armour, something invented by the British in the 1960s, but used by the Americans in the M1 Abrams before them. The engine, transmission and suspension all have better performance and reliability, making it faster and more manoeuvrable than the Chieftain.

It is armed with the same powerful 120mm rifled gun found on the Chieftain, but has been further enhanced with the introduction of the TOGS thermal imaging system, making it a more effective fighting machine at night.

Royal Ordnance developed the ROMOR Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) package to be installed on vehicles to increase their protection against High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) weapons. The package developed for the Challenger consists of ROMOR protection for the front hull glacis and nose, as well as additional Chobham composite armour that replaced the normal bazooka side skirts. Royal Ordnance designed, manufactured and delivered the ROMOR armour package in less than three months. They were delivered as kitsets and fitted in the field.
