Volunteers were not a part of the regular army; they lived off of the spoils of war and were not paid as mercenary troops. Volunteers were simply a somewhat organized formation that included men from various social classes and ethnic groups that went on a campaign in the hope of loot. As they did not receive pay their main motivation was to get rich by taking spoils of war. Such a unit included nobles, Cossacks, Poles, Lithuanians, and even Hungarians or Tatars. They were often considered bandits hiding under the royal banner. Much depended on the personality of the commander.
