In the middle of 17th century matchlock muskets and pikes were the typical weapons of infantry regiments. While the proportions sometimes varied, about two-thirds of the troop consisted of musketeers, dressed in accordance with the fashion of the time, in loose jackets and wide knee-length breeches, stockings and boots. On their heads they wore hats or caps, which almost completely replaced the morion helmet, which was still popular during the Thirty Years’ War. Pikemen were armed with pikes and sidearms for hand to- hand combat, and in some units they also retained protective gear (helmets and armor). Tactics were based on the use of the countermarch or salvo, and the pikemen mainly provided protection against cavalry charges.
