Haiduks or Polish-Hungarian infantry can trace their origins back to the 16th century. They were armed with matchlock muskets or arquebuses and sabers. Polearms, such as halberds, played a secondary role and were carried by the commanders of the tens. Infantry also had to be ready to perform various engineering works therefore they were equipped with short axes for chopping wood. In combat an infantry banner was arranged in nine to ten ranks. Muskets were fired in rows: after shooting the first row kneeled, and the following row shot over their heads and kneeled to enable the next rank to shoot. After a full salvo infantry charged with drawn sabers into close combat. Such a unit had significant firepower but its principle disadvantage was that it had no proper defense against enemy cavalry.
