The national Muscovite cavalry included a levy of nobility and was called by various titles: opolchenie (levy of nobility), boyar cavalry, and pomiestna cavalry. Poorer nobles form the boyar sons cavalry and were obliged to serve in person. Pomiestna cavalry were a typical medium cavalry with varied armament and armour. Although in the 17th century the combat value of the pomiestna was low, they constituted a large proportion of the Muscovite cavalry. On the battlefield they were able to perform all sorts of tasks assigned to them but were usually used to support the more valuable reiters.
