This brigade consists of the Royal Marine Commandos and Dutch Royal Marines, and is a key part of NATO’s quick reaction force for Norway in case of a Soviet invasion and is equipped and regularly trained to operate in Arctic conditions.

The force is designed to rapidly deploy to Norway to reinforce the Norwegian army. It is a significant element of the Allied Command Europe’s Mobile Force (Land), also known as the Northern Option deployment.

British 3 Commando Brigade is renowned for its amphibious capabilities and experience. This brigade plays a crucial role in NATO’s defensive strategy for Norway, acting as a swift response force in the event of an armed conflict.

The Royal Marines can trace their origins back to 1664, when the first English naval infantry unit was formed. Originally called the Duke of York and Albany’s Maritime Regiment of Foot, it soon became known as the Admiral’s Regiment. After several name changes, disbandments and re-raising, the marines became a permanent part of the Royal Navy by the end of the 18th Century and in 1802 they were titled the Royal Marines by King George III.

The Royal Marines underwent a notable change after 1945, when the Royal Marines took on the main responsibility for the role and training of the Commandos. Since their creation in 1942, Royal Marines Commandos had engaged in active operations across the globe. Notably, they provided the first military unit to perform an air assault insertion by helicopter, during the Suez Crisis in 1956.

OPERATION CORPORATE
In 1982 Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, and 3 Commando Brigade (reinforced by the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the Parachute Regiment) was one of the two main British land formations that took part in Operation Corporate to recapture the islands. The brigade landed at San Carlos and marched across East Falkland to Stanley. Argentine units were defeated in several sharp engagements, and the Argentine forces surrendered on 14 June 1982.

The British Commando Troop is the best starting point for any British army.
