The sipahi (feudal riders) were the basic Ottoman cavalry. Each sipahi was obliged to turn up for campaigns in person or with an appropriate retinue. Feudal Ottoman cavalry used a wide range of weapons and as each sipahi equipped himself for a campaign there was no standardization among the men. In general, Turkish riders loved to use a bow while scorning firearms. A well armed sipahi might wear armour, a small shield, a light spear or a short lance, a sabre, sometimes an estoc or a mace. It should be mentioned that the excellent Turkish horses also contributed to the quality of this cavalry. Sipahi were characterized by the ability to make charges but the individual skills of the soldiers were not in hand with tactical discipline. As a result, the Ottoman charges were ferocious but poorly coordinated.
