The nobles were obliged to provide military service in return for the right to use land. This cavalry is called by various titles: opolchenie (levy of nobility), boyar cavalry, and pomiestna cavalry. The poorer nobility was referred to as the \u003cb\u003eBoyar Sons\u003c\/b\u003e, while the wealthier ones were known as \u003cb\u003eDvorians\u003c\/b\u003e. The pomiestna cavalry was a typical medium-sized cavalry, with varying armor and equipment (with the dvorians generally being far better armored and armed), and of varying combat value. It performed on the battlefield tasks typical for cavalry, but rather auxiliary to the more skilled reiters. They were most of all obliged to mounted service, but could fight as infantry when necessary.
