Therefore, the cavalry carried out typical tasks, such as reconnaissance, screening or pursuit. During the course of an engagement, Cossack cavalry usually fought dismounted within the defensive perimeter of a wagon train. At that period of time, Cossack cavalry was more similar to Polish dragoons than to Tatar cavalry which was supposed to be its precursor.  Mounted Cossacks, being light cavalry, did not use any armor and their favorite weapons were sabers and various spears.
